Jocslyn Carpenter Nursing, Class of 2023 Can you tell us a little bit about your background as a first-generation student? My parents didn't go to college and neither did my siblings. My mom knew from my experiences in grade school that I was destined to go to college. I had been very involved in both class and extracurriculars. We learned together how to apply and figure out how to fill out the FAFSA. I'm originally from Michigan but had family friends in Ardmore. I decided to do some campus tours while visiting them. I toured 麻豆精品视频 and really loved it and I decided then and there that I had to make it work. As far as paying for school, I had to find and apply for other scholarships. I don't test well and have a lot of test anxiety but I worked very hard to earn scholarships. Was college always on the table for you? What made you decide to pursue nursing? College I knew from the get-go. I love my parents and I didn't want to struggle like they had to. My dad was a factory worker and it took many years for him to become a manager. My mom was a nursing aid and now she's also a manager at a surgery center. They both worked their way up and I didn't want to have to struggle to do that for as long as they did. My mom told me, "You need to do better than we did." I knew I liked school and I was very interested in science and working with people. Nursing was the perfect major for me and I knew walking in that that was what I wanted to do. Can you think back to when you were a first-year student and what was challenging?? The most challenging thing was moving away from home. I didn't get a chance to go home on the weekends to see family. I call my mom all the time. I also joined a sorority and that helped me get to know people on campus. I knew I needed to grow roots to help give me a bigger reason to be here. I became an OL and finding connections was the biggest piece of advice I gave to students when I was leading sessions with them.
