How does it feel to be a First-Gen Student?
It can be somewhat isolating for me because my older siblings and parents didn't go to college. Sometimes they do not know what questions to ask or maybe they do not understand some of the things I'm going through. I can talk to them about things but they don't always relate.
Was higher education always on the table for you or did you consider other options after high school?
For me, it was always on the table because where I come from, there weren't a lot of opportunities apart from working in the service industry. I really wanted to be independent and have the option of moving away. Renting an apartment and living on my own would be a challenge but going to college allowed me different financial options such as scholarships and student loans. I was able to fulfill my goals to both obtain my education and live independently in a dorm.
What are some of the things that surprised you or maybe you didn't expect when you came to college?
I was honestly surprised at how class sizes can vary depending on the subject. I have some classes in a big lecture hall but also smaller ones that have fewer students than even some of my high school classes. I was also surprised at how there could be a mixture of students - like how a senior and freshman could be in the same class.
What are some things that keep you motivated in school?
Honestly, I just like being good at things. Doing well in a class keeps me motivated and simultaneously, not doing well in a class also means I need to do more. I would say I am easily motivated.
What are some things that keep you motivated in school?
Talk to professors. I know so many people that are afraid to do so because of assumptions that may not be true. Professors aren't mindreaders and they may not know you're struggling. It is good to bring some challenges you're having to their attention so that you can work out a solution.
