Can you define in your own words what first-generation means to you?

I鈥檓 the oldest sibling and the first to experience college in my family. It's important to me to create a path and set a good example for my younger sisters and my future children one day.

Was college always on the table for you when you were in high school?

Yes. My mom wasn't able to get a full education - she had to drop out within like a year to live with my grandparents for financial reasons. My dad never had the opportunity since he entered the workforce straight from high school. College may not be for everyone and there are so many options now - you could opt for trade school, join the military, go straight into the workforce, or a 4-year program. I have known for a long time I have always had an interest in not only science but meteorology and atmospheric science, so I knew going to college was right for me.

Do you have advice for other first-generation students?

Keep your mind open to the possibility of meeting new people. They could always be your support system down the road. I know from moving to campus back in August, I had a great opportunity to meet people from all over and learn about how they were raised and what their values were. Take time to build relationships that will help provide for you emotionally, physically, and academically. I have also been able to connect with people through extracurricular activities and have learned a lot about my program and even potential summer internship opportunities in the future.

The other mantra I tell myself is that "No Dream is Too Big." My big dream is to get my master's degree and work for NASA. I hope to achieve that one day!
